Foil-stamping

In bookbinding, short for stamping foil: a plastic film coated with clear or coloured lacquer and a thin layer of condensed aluminium, which is used to block covers. The aluminium layer and coloured lacquer on top of it detach from the plastic carrier under heat and pressure from a blocking brass during the blocking process, leaving the design or lettering engraved on the block transferred into the surface of the case material with the thin coloured metallic layer on top of it
