Gravure

a printing process in which the printing areas are below the non-printing surface. These recesses are filled with a liquid ink with the surplus removed from the non-printing areas by the doctor blade before the paper ‘sucks’ the ink from the cells. Also called photogravure (UK) and rotogravure (US)
